Please join us for an evening of elegance as the NAACP Mount Vernon Branch celebrates individuals who work in the community and raise funding for scholarships.
The evening will entail dancing, laughter, and enjoyment at the Greentree Country Club at 538 Davenport Avenue, New Rochelle, NY, at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2023.
We request all of our guests to wear formal attire for the event.
Our honorees are as follows:
- Tajian Nelson – Democratic Commissioner at the Board of Elections. Nelson is the first Black female commissioner of the county’s elections board.
- Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard- On November 5, 2019, Mayor Patterson-Howard was elected the first female mayor in the history of the City of Mount Vernon and the first woman of color elected mayor in Westchester County. Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard has focused on strengthening the local community and using her relationships on the city, county, state, and federal levels to bolster Mount Vernon and restore trust in the city’s leadership.
- Dr. K. Veronica Smith – Dr. Smith has extensive roots in Mount Vernon. She is a graduate of Mount Vernon High School. Her professional journey in the Mount Vernon City School District began in 2001. In February 2023, she became Acting Superintendent of the Mount Vernon City School District. In her 20-plus years in the district, she has contributed several to the Mount Vernon community. Under her leadership, online registration was implemented; this made the enrollment process more user-friendly for families. She was instrumental in returning our autistic population from out-of-district, which resulted in savings to the district of approximately $1 million.
