As a small business owner, ordained minister, new mom, and wife, I juggle many responsibilities. Over time, I’ve learned that the biggest failures come from losing sight of who we are. This hit me hard during a moment of doubt and defeat, challenging everything I believed about myself and my work. It was a crucial step to overcoming failure through resilience and gratitude.

In the world of event planning, Kelly Denise Events had built a reputation for excellence. Every event was a masterpiece in my eyes, a reflection of my passion and commitment. However, the moment came when I had to plan my first large-scale gala. I poured my heart and soul into it, believing it to be a success. But then, the client’s harsh criticism hit like a ton of bricks, shattering my confidence. The criticism devastated me, making me question my skills, passion, and identity. Yet, it was a moment where I had to focus on resilience and gratitude.

To make matters worse, I had recently endured a miscarriage, a loss that left me grappling with grief and sorrow. It felt as though life was throwing one challenge after another at me. The once vibrant world of unicorns and rainbows I lived in was now clouded by dark storms. I spiraled into a deep funk, questioning my worth and my purpose. Was this what failure looked like? To many, it might seem like a small bump in the road, but to me, it was a monumental defeat. I started to lose myself, letting criticism and losses define me. However, overcoming this failure through resilience and gratitude started to become my focus.

During this time, I took a pause from event planning to focus on myself. The journey was not easy. Though my husband and I found joy in becoming pregnant through IVF, the difficult first trimester deepened my depression. Life felt meaningless, and I struggled to escape the darkness. But throughout this struggle, overcoming failure through resilience and gratitude remained my guiding light.

One day, I woke up with a renewed sense of purpose, realizing I am more than my failures. Being my best isn’t about perfection but resilience. I reminded myself I’m skilled and able to overcome any challenge. This was a significant step in overcoming failure through focusing on resilience and gratitude.

This awakening led me to create a “Congratulations Board,” an idea I saw on Instagram. The board became a daily ritual, a place to manifest my desires and express gratitude in advance. Each day, I thanked God for future blessings and the strength to face both sorrow and joy. It was a reminder that in my weakest moments, God’s strength would shine through. Through this practice, I began overcoming failure by harnessing resilience and practicing gratitude.

This practice of gratitude and encouragement shifted my perspective on failure. What once felt like an insurmountable defeat now seemed bite-sized in comparison to the blessings that awaited me. The client’s criticism, the loss of my first child, and my moments of doubt were all part of a larger story, one where I would emerge stronger and more determined, overcoming failure through resilience and gratitude.

What we see as Failures and defeat are hard to move on from. But one day the light shines through the darkness and you see you had to have dark days to appreciate and own the bright days ahead.
